Loy Krathong Festival

On our second day in Phuket, 21st November 2010, we got a chance to observe Loy Krathong (or Loi Krathong) festival. It falls on the full moon night of 12th lunar month, usually in November, and is celebrated across Thailand.

Loy(=floating) Krathong is celebrated to ask the mother of water to forgive us for polluting water. It is celebrated by floating Krathongs in the sea, river, pond or canal.  Krathong is a little cup shaped, like a lotus flower, made from banana leaves, each with a candle and incense stick inside.

A Krathong
We observed hundreds of people floating Krathongs at Patong beach. Many cheered as their Krathong floated away because the Thais believe that their misfortune or misery floats away with the Krathong. There were also many flying paper lanterns in the air, just like tiny hot air balloon, making the sky glitter due to hundreds of these lanterns.
